Writing with the iPad - 6 month review from @iainbroome http://writeforyourlife.net/writing-ipad-review

Writer’s Box

Not writer’s block, but writer’s box. What happens when someone puts you in a box?

We know we can’t just say whatever we want, all the time. This is especially true for those of us who find ourselves working for others. It’s a given. But sometimes the walls of that box just keep closing in, and it seems like you’re never going to get out.

This is why I thank the internet. Without you, oh Internet, where could I sit and type and publish a stream of thought in mere seconds?

On Inspiration and Gadgets

Writing inspiration comes from the strangest places. Sometimes it’s reading other good writing, like today when I was browsing through the blog of a seriously ill patient for a project. She didn’t self-identify as a writer; she was a mom and a public high school secretary just writing about her experiences with treatment and recovery, but she had a brilliant talent for engrossing storytelling.

The other moment occured during my morning walk to the car before work. I saw a squirrel feverishly digging up an acorn in someone’s front garden and thought up a brilliant metaphor…which, of course, I can’t remember now. But at the time, I was struck by my absolute creative genius (of course). The lesson here is to always carry a notebook. You never know when you might think up the best line of your life.

Which leads me to another pondering/inspirational moment…I received an iPad today at work. Not to keep, of course, but to use and get acquainted with. It made me wonder if I’d find some kind of tablet useful for on-the-fly writing and the jotting down of these little tidbits of inspiration, even if they never amount to anything more than some random lines saved in a text document.

I admit that in the mobile device + writing world, I’m woefully under-informed of the possibilities. I have an Android smartphone, but don’t use it for writing (except for the occasional tweet), and I have a Kindle, which I use for reading. If you’ve been using a tablet or other mobile device for writing, let us know what it is and how you’re liking it, because I’m always down to try out an alternative to sticky notes and scribbled scraps of paper.
